Nestled in the mountains of Kaohsiung, Namasia District is one of the city’s most beloved spring destinations. Every year, its forest trails come alive after dark with the glow of fireflies, drawing visitors from across the region. This year’s Firefly Season runs from March 21 through April 27.

Namasia is home to over 20 species of fireflies, making it one of the richest firefly habitats in the city. Guided night tours are available along designated mountain trails and are included with every ticket. Entry is priced at NT$250 per person, which also includes a NT$100 voucher redeemable at local shops. Seniors aged 65 and above may enter free of charge. Children aged 12 and under are also admitted free during the Tomb Sweeping Festival holiday in April.

The festival offers more than just firefly viewing. An Indigenous market runs every Friday and throughout the weekend along the trails, and the district’s only convenience store will host four traditional song and dance performances during the event. The opening weekend also coincides with the National Indigenous Games, held from March 21 to 24, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Getting to Namasia is straightforward this year. Half-day, one-day, and two-day tour packages can be booked through the TBS app, and new bus routes from Kaohsiung and Tainan offer easy access to the area. Free shuttle buses run on weekends and during public holidays .And for those who want to make the most of the season, the local peach harvest begins in April and runs through June.
