Located just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu, Pulau Sepanggar offers visitors a unique blend of nature, recreation and sustainability. Surrounded by scenic coastal landscapes and rich biodiversity, the island is gaining recognition as an emerging destination for travellers seeking authentic and environmentally responsible tourism experiences. 

Visitors can enjoy a variety of nature-based and marine activities, including snorkelling, kayaking, coastal exploration, beach recreation and scenic boat excursions. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and lush tropical greenery, the island offers a refreshing escape where visitors can experience Sabah’s coastal environment while appreciating its rich biodiversity and natural beauty.

To further enhance the island’s tourism potential, Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) is implementing the Pulau Sepanggar Sustainable Tourism Development Project. One of its key initiatives is the Eco-Hiking Trail Development Programme, which is designed to provide visitors with opportunities to explore the island’s natural environment while learning about biodiversity, conservation and responsible tourism practices.

The project also includes the Sustainable Tourism Programme at Kampung Pulau Sepanggar, which promotes community participation and environmental stewardship. Through the Citra Kasih – Community to Community (C2C) Programme and the Zero Waste Island – Waste to Wealth (W2W) Programme, local communities are encouraged to play an active role in preserving the island’s environment and supporting sustainable tourism development.

Complementing these efforts is the Scientific Coastal Expedition of Kampung Pulau Sepanggar, which supports conservation and environmental education while contributing to a better understanding of the island’s coastal and marine ecosystems. 

By combining outdoor recreation, nvironmental conservation and community participation, Pulau Sepanggar reflects Kota Kinabalu’s commitment to sustainable tourism development. From kayaking and snorkelling to nature exploration and environmental learning, the island offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience how tourism and conservation can work hand in hand. As Pulau Sepanggar continues to evolve, it is poised to become one of Kota Kinabalu’s most distinctive sustainable tourism destinations.​
